Overcoming the dificulties of European eel reproduction. Optimization of artificial maturation, eel husbandry and breeding conditions. Production of gelatinous plankton as nutrition basis. Breeding and feeding experiments - subproject 2

Project

Project code: 2817303510
Contract period: 01.02.2014 - 31.01.2017
Budget: 62,970 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

The joint project „Overcoming the difficulties of European eel reproduction (AalPro)“ aimed a establishing a procedure to produce European eel first feeding larves in Germany. The consortium was led by the Thünen institute of Fisheries Ecology and further consisted of the Institute for Hydrobiology and Fisheries Science (University of Hamburg), BlueBio Tech GmbH, Büsum and Kunststoff Spranger GmbH, Plauen. The project included development and construction of husbandry and rearing systems for adult eels, eggs larvae as well as the development of methods for artifical maturation, fertilization, egg incubation and prolonged larval survival. Production methods for gelatinous plankton organisms werde tested in order to investigate their feasibilty as starter feed for eel larvae and artifical larval feed werde developed. Aslo suitable algae species were identified and produced as diet for plankton organisms that were chosen as a potential larval feed for eels. During the project the production of first feeding eel larvae was achieved repeatedly and larval survival was prolonged to 23 days post hatch. Furthermore, a set of promising diets for eel larvae were developed.
