Joint project: improving production reliability and extending the offer period by growing organic strawberries in polytunnels

Project

Project code: 2806OE262
Contract period: 01.08.2008 - 31.01.2012
Budget: 148,075 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

Strawberries are one of the main fruits sold in Supermarkets within Germany. Local conventionally produced Strawberries are available from April until November. The land dedicated to organic Strawberries is currently only 2.1% of the total area of production. Reasons for the low availability of organic Strawberries in Germany is due to poor transport reliability and shelf life, the short season of organic strawberries, poor motivation of growers to change from conventional to organic because of higher risks and a shortage of successful example organic growers to follow. A fundamental improvement is expected with a change from outside to Tunnel production. Trials are highly recommended and planned. The trials are planned to be undertaken over 3 vegetation periods in a research station as well as on an organic farm. Shortday varieties and everbearers will be cultivated in a closed Tunnel, a rain shelter styled Tunnel and in open field. The trials should show, whether the expected improvements in product reliability, yield and quality are high enough for commercial tunnel production of organic Strawberries. Different varieties will be tested. The disease and pests level will be screened and organic control scheme will also be developed. We expect that the results should improve the cultivation of organic strawberries and also significantly enhance the market supply of locally available organic strawberries.
