Collaborative project: Functional analysis of introgression lines for broadening genetic diversity in rye – Subproject 3
Project
Project code: 2814301807
Contract period: 01.02.2008
- 31.01.2011
Budget: 113,350 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
Crop improvement inevitably leads to a reduction in genetic variation in elite germplasm although genetic variation is a prominent factor of selection gain. Introgression of agriculturally non-adapted germplasm increases genetic diversity. We analyzed ten selected introgression lines (IL) in generation BC3S2 having specific, marker-assessed donor chromosome segments (DCS). By recombination and use of newly developed STS markers (Partner JKI) 29 sub-ILs were produced bearing only one and two DCS, respectively. Genetic maps were updated to include the new marker loci. Phenotyping of the BC4S1 lines in the field revealed sufficient genotypic variance for agronomic traits. In a simulation study, the development of introgression lines in rye could be optimized with a minimum number of marker data points. For the first time, the proof of concept for using ILs in rye was given. It will allow in future a more efficient use of quantitative traits from genetic resources.
