Project code: BfR-BIOS-08-1322-316
Contract period: 01.04.2008 - 31.12.2008
Purpose of research: Applied research

At present, the reliable and sensitive detection of viruses in food is the limiting step in attempts to verify food-borne infections and to determine criteria for the virological safety of foods. Especially, the concentration and purification of viruses from foods is difficult due to low amounts of virus within the food and the presence of substances which inhibit the detection system within several food matrices. In fact, there is no reliable and sensitive detection method for viruses among the published methods, which could be applied to routine analysis of foods so far. Recently, a novel method has been developed which enables highly specific extraction and purification of complex biomolecules from several mixtures. This method, called ?Molecular Imprinting?, should be applied for the first time to viruses in the proposed project. At first, the method will be established and tested using a model virus, the bacteriophage MS2. Thereafter, the generation of Molecularly Imprinted Polymers for noroviruses is planned. This method will be tested with artificial virus-contaminated foods and compared to classical methods in later steps.
