Food and consumer protection

Project code: BfR-PRS-08-1322-290
Contract period: 01.04.2007 - 31.12.2008
Purpose of research: Applied research

The exposure via skin and the possible formation of metabolites in / on the skin play an important role during the toxicological evaluation of consumer products with skin contact. For example azo dyes, which are applied in consumer products such as toys and clothing textiles and also for the colouring of cosmetics and as hair dyes, can be split by the microflora of the skin into aromatic amines. Some of these amines are known as carcinogenic and allergenic. In many cases the available data for metabolism of these substances is insufficient. Therefore such investigations are to be accomplished using suitable in vitro models of human skin.
