Increase of the agronomic importance of yellow (Lupinus luteus) and white lupins (Lupinus albus) for organic farming by breeding methods

Project

Project code: 2809OE071
Contract period: 01.04.2011 - 31.01.2014
Budget: 279,167 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

The project aims at increasing agronomic importance, yield and yield stability of yellow and white lupins. This comprises the improvement of resistance against anthracnose, increasing of the protein content and lowering of antinutritive ingrediences like alkaloids. Besides this selection for earliness and high yield will be conducted. Methods to improve resistance to anthracnose established already in blue lupins will be tranferred to yellow and white lupins. In order to get information on earliness and yield three years field trials will be conducted on three different organic locations. Based on these trials the environmental and genetic variability in the protein- and alkaloid content will be determined. To achieve this an efficient NIR method will be developed. To enhance breeding for resistance against anthracnose PCR based markers will be developed. In a last step crosses will be conducted to combine anthracnose resistance, earliness high yield and protein content with a low content of alkaloids.
