Clarification of Rhizomania-complex as a contribution for the sustainable bioethanol production from sugar beet
Project
Project code: JKI-EP-08-1104
Contract period: 01.06.2009
- 30.06.2012
Purpose of research: Applied research
Rhizomania is the serious and economically most important virus disease of sugar beet, which causes major reductions in sugar beet root yield reduction and sugar quality and content. At present, planting partially resistant cultivars is the only economical way to control this devastating disease. However, during last decade new aggressive resistance-breaking isolates of BNYVV were identified and characterized worldwide. The aim of the project is the clarification of the viral pathogen spectrum affecting sugar beet, elucidation of synergy between sugar beet viruses and the development of new sensitive and reliable diagnostic assays for the identification and differentiation of these pathogens. The results of this study can make a contribution in the cultivation of healthy sugar beet for the sustainable bioethanol extraction. This project supports the BMELV efforts in the respect to the development of measures to ensure the further utilization of sugar beet growing areas, heavily infested with BNYVV, to stabilize the cultivation of sugar beet in such locations with the aim to produce profitable renewable raw.
