Project code: BfR-BIOS-08-1329-438
Contract period: 01.09.2010 - 30.09.2011
Purpose of research: Basic research

Bacteriophages possess a promising potential to combat zoonotic agents in foods of animal origin. Data are needed to perform scientific risk assessments on the survival (activity) of these phages under technological stressors. In addition, information on the qualitative and quantitative action of bacteriophages on zoonotic agents is urgently required. The goal of this project proposal is to collect data on the mode of action of bacteriophages and their efficacy in combating zoonotic agents on selected bacterial agent-matrix-combinations (e.g. Salmonella in chicken meat, Listeria in cheese, Campylobacter in chicken meat). BfR has a large expertise in that area. Nonetheless, external capacities are needed to perform lab based experiments with different food matrices. A goal of the project is to create a nucleus of further cooperation and -if possible- to apply for research funding by the DFG in the future, based on the results of the research groups.
