Production processes

Project code: BAZ-IRP-02-2188
Contract period: 01.03.2006 - 31.12.2008
Purpose of research: Applied research

Since the end of the 1970s, an increasing and lasting contamination of soil with fugus-transmissible viruses has been observed in Germany. Since the chemical control of the vector (Polymyxa graminis) and the virus is not possible and, on the other hand, crop rotation measures do not sufficiently reduce the infection potential, the production in contaminated fields can be maintained only by cultivating resistant cultivars. Unlike for virus resistance, strategies for improving vector resistance by breeding have not yet been available. Meanwhile, Hordeum wild types exhibiting resistance to P. graminis could be identified and combined with cultivated forms. The resulting populations shall be evaluated concerning their character expression and character inheritance. The resistance is to be mapped; preferably closely linked PCR-assisted markers are to be developed with the aim to enhance and accelerate the research and breeding process.
