Project code: 28RZ372020
Contract period: 10.02.2015 - 31.03.2018
Budget: 466,347 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

The project ProKlaue developed and evaluated procedures for a sustainable improvement of husbandry conditions and optimization of claw health management in dairy cows. The overarching goal was a significant improvement of claw health in intense housing systems and the improvement of animal wellbeing.
Claw biomechanics of the bovine distal limb were analyzed in ex vivo and in vivo studies using biplanar fluoroscopic kinematography (www.fluokin.de). Pressure measurements were conducted using a mobile and flexible foil-based pressure measurement system to determine pressure distribution under the bovine claw. Different types of rubber mats for walking areas in cattle housing were evaluated in comparison to concrete flooring. Furthermore, an objective assessment of the functional claw trimming method as well as the development and evaluation of a modified preventive claw trimming method optimized for soft flooring were realized during the project.
