Collaborative project: Establishment of spectroscopic techniques for operational in ovo-gender determination in domestic chicken (Gallus gallus f. dom.) - subproject 1
Project
Project code: 2813IP003
Contract period: 12.06.2015
- 11.06.2017
Budget: 656,669 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
As laying performance and meat yield are correlated negatively, there is little possible use for the male offspring of layers that would be economically worthwile at the moment. Therefore, in Germany approx. 40 million male chicks per year are currently separated on the basis of gender-specific, phenotypical characteristics immediately after hatch, killed and marketed as day-old chicks for feed. The research project aims at advancing molecular spectroscopic methods which allow for reliable pre-hatch sex determination in domestic chicken. The aim of the project is to conceptualise and construct an operational demonstrator of the in ovo-gender determination unit. In preparation for transfer to a marketable machine, this unit should be able to measure and classify an operationally relevant quantity of hatching eggs per given time unit.
