Development of pre-symptomatic and specific detection methods of grapevine diseases like esca, phytoplasmoses and virus diseases as a basis for regional monitoring of vineyards and the development of control strategies, Subproject 1

Project

Project code: 2815702515, JKI-ZR-08-5199
Contract period: 01.07.2016 - 30.06.2019
Budget: 629,088 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

"To date, no curative treatments for grapevine diseases like esca, phytoplasmoses, and viruses are known. Therefore, the specific pre-symptomatic detection of these diseases could serve as the basis for new monitoring and control strategies. The early diagnosis was based on (i) non-invasive hyperspectral imaging in the range of 400 – 2,500 nm and (ii) invasive reference measurements. In this project, images of symptomatic and non-symptomatic grapevines were analyzed with machine learning algorithms in order to find significant differences in their spectra. It was possible to identify different phytoplasma diseased greenhouse plants (grapevines and Catharanthus roseus). Furthermore, several virus diseases could be detected and differentiated with high accuracy in both greenhouse and field. The in-field detection of Esca symptoms was also successful and, additionally, tested by airborne multispectral imaging in order to evaluate the applicability of this system for viticulture."
