Production processes

Project code: JKI-ZL-08-8015
Contract period: 01.01.2004 - 31.12.2006
Purpose of research: Applied research

Nitrogen fertilization and soil tillage make up for the highest portions of the consumption of fossil energy in the agriculture and cause the most serious interferences into the agroecosystem. Although demanded by pioneers of the ecological agriculture just like in wide sections of the soil scientists, procedures of the conservation (reduced) tillage found so far hardly entrance into the ecological agriculture. Apart from problems with the adjustment of the weed competition insufficient N-mineralization in untillaged soils with a slow mineralization turnover might represent the main problems in spring. Diminished returns can be partly compensated by use of leguminous green manure winter crops by conservation tillage in the ecological corn production. The deployment species (above all Vicia sp.) suited for this purpose contributes both to the increase of the diversity of species in cultivation systems as well as to the on farm conservation and sustainable use of genetic resources of Vicia sp. The goal of the project consists in the collection, evaluation and in the comparison of winter hardy leguminous plants, which are available ex situ and in situ, for their suitability for mulch tillage in the ecological agriculture and horticulture.
