Development of a strategy for managing the virulence of Cydia pomonella granulovirus (CpGV) to control the codling moth in organic apple production

The objective of the proposal is the development of a long-term strategy for the control of codling moth in organic apple production based on different components by a joint effort of research institutes, extension services and fruit growers. For that purpose a sustainable application management of Cydia pomonella granulovirus (CpGV) is as necessary as effective alternatives, which are currently being developed.
As a first step, basic questions on the virulence management of CpGV, such as the pathogenicity and efficacy of different CpGV isolates, will be clarified. Based on these results, the outcome of field trials, where nematodes and Trichogramma are used, and on the results of improved fungal treatments, a long-term control strategy will be developed and tested. For the monitoring of CpGV resistant codling moth populations in different geographic regions, a rapid test system is available. Bioassays and crossing experiments with resistant individuals will be applied in order to determine the infectivity of new virus isolates of CpGV and the inheritance of the resistance. The codling moth management strategies to be developed will be adapted to regional requirements by a close collaboration with local extension services and growers.
