- 31.12.2024
Budget: 495,358 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: plant production and horticulture, fertilisation, water
Climate change is putting park, city and avenue trees under stress, especially due to heat waves and dry periods. Costs for irrigation and tree losses are exploding. In order to make more efficient use of manpower and the valuable resource of water, it should be known exactly where water is needed and in which precise quantity. This already starts at the tree-nursery. A balanced supply of nutrients and water along the value chain is a prerequisite for a tree to remain healthy. The NuTree project partners develop and test the use of sensors that record soil moisture, temperature and other data directly at the tree and transmit them from the cultivation area. An AI-supported solution will be created for the evaluation. A computer-based modelling of the need for action and management then enables an economical, resource-saving use of material and working effort. At the same time, the loss of trees is reduced at all stages of their development. A further, mobile version of the data collection should also enable the necessary information during the transport of trees from the nursery to their destination, which often takes days, sometimes weeks.
