Institute for Technology Assessment and Systems Analysis (ITAS)
Institution
Section overview
Description
ITAS is the largest and most long-standing scientific institution in Germany dealing with technology assessment (TA) and systems analysis in theory and practice. Today, there are more than 100 scientific staff members; approximately half of them are natural scientists or engineers, the others hold a degree in social sciences or arts. ITAS is involved in the research program of the Helmholtz Association (HGF); its research activities contribute to the Helmholtz program “Technology, Innovation and Society”. In addition, ITAS is conducting a lot of research in third party funded projects and contract work. Important external clients and funding partners in politics are the German and the European parliaments and – on the side of government – the European Commission, federal and state ministries and authorities (e.g. Federal Environmental Agency). Companies and organizations from industry are potential clients, too. As an institute of KIT, ITAS is also involved in university teaching and scientific (further) education. A focus is on the supervision of scientific papers ranging from term papers to habilitation theses.
