Description
The Marine Zoology team investigates marine animals from various regions of the world's oceans. The size spectrum extends from the minute, but extremely abundant copepods (30 m). Ecophysiological and biochemical adaptations of marine organisms and their environment as well as ecological and energetic aspects of marine communities and food webs (life cycles, trophic relationships, energy transfer) are in the centre of interest. One focus is on the life strategy of dominant zooplankton groups (copepods, krill). In addition, benthic organisms and marine vertebrates (fish, seabirds, whales) are being investigated. The investigated regions comprise Arctic and Antarctic, temperate latitudes (North Sea, North Artlantic, Baltic Sea), subtropical (Namibia, South Africa) and tropical (Red Sea) habitats. Our research concentrates on marine ecosystems with a strong seasonality. Scientific work is carried out on board of various research vessels, at research stations and home laboratories in Bremen. The labs of the working group have state of the art equipment including temperature-controlled aquarium rooms, which offer very good conditions for experimental research on marine organisms.
