Development of active and passive bat rabies surveillance in Germany (part of a research network for zoonoses funded by BMBF [01KI1006C])
Project
Project code: FLI-IfE-08-Wu-0028
Contract period: 01.11.2010
- 31.03.2014
Purpose of research: Applied research
Insufficient available data due to missing or inadequate surveillance is an important reason why some diseases are wrong in the general public and public health risk perception. This holds true also for rabies as a neglected disease. Especially with bat rabies cases in Europe seem to be correlated rather with the number of animals tested and may not reflect the true picture. Taking Germany as an example it is envisage to demonstrate how a system of bat rabies surveillance can be established. Both nationally and internationally, this project will lead to a network of research groups in human and veterinary medicine.
