Purpose of research: Basic research

As the majority of people in the northwest of Vietnam depend on agriculture, reduced yields as a consequence of soil degradation are a serious threat. B4.2 aims to analyze the suitability for agricultural use and the vulnerability of the soils in the whole Yen Chau district. In order to establish a regionalization of meaningful parameters which affect crop growth, a SOTER database covering the whole Yen Chau district will be established. Geologic data will be reclassified from an existing geological map. Relief attributes will derive from a digital elevation model. In addition to soil data gathered in the 3rd phase, further soil analysis on about 60 characteristic sites distributed over the whole Yen Chau district will be carried out. Participatory methods will be used to find out the farmer’s perception of soil quality and growth constraints. The actual land use pattern will derive from multispectral remote sensing data. Land use history and man- agement practices will be reconstructed in interviews with farmers. Climate data are provided by three climate stations. Using the SOTER methodology, soil information will be linked to classes of geology and terrain. Data about climate, land use and man- agement practices will be linked to the SOTER units. Based on these data, the EPIC model will be used to simulate yields and erosion of crops (e.g. maize, cassava, and agroforestry systems) and management practices (e.g. till, no-till). In order to assess the degree, impact, intensity and risk of soil degradation, undisturbed (forest) sites will be compared with cultivated and fallow sites.
