Project code: 2812HS002
Contract period: 01.07.2012 - 30.06.2014
Budget: 125,077 Euro
Purpose of research: Basic research

Project aim is the investigation of social and economic change in two villages in the federal land Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt on the basis of preceding investigations. The living conditions in are not alone influenced by the so called transformation process, but more by a far-reaching change of rural societies such as globalisation, centralisation, information and communication technology. The research is focused on changes in Social Work, social care and informal support networks in rural areas. We explore the change of social support systems: on the one hand family, neighbourly and voluntary assistances, on the other hand professional carriers and/or officers. The issue of social problems is often not so pronounced but problems such as homelessness, poverty, violence or substance abuse occur in rural communities. Exemplary we study support structures by inhabitants in need of care (above all older peoples) by rural youth in the transition of school, vocational education and occupation as well as households in precarious life situations. The professional debate of social work in rural areas includes working conditions (i.e. great distances to provide service, managing multiple and dual relationships, lack of formal resources in rural areas), social relationships (i.e. lack of anonymity) and organizational factors (i.e. efficiency arguments). The first work package comprises discussions and coordination of cooperation partners. Further work packages cover the field studies in the villages including the expert interviews, the questioning of inhabitants and the group discussions with young peoples. In a specific work package we valid our results with local actors in the villages and summarise them in a final report. An important package contains the investigation of social support structures. In this object we analyse the empirical findings of our cooperation partners and realise further investigations with depth interview in four villages.
