Purpose of research: Applied research
The superodinate objective of this project lies in the analysis of the change in rural living conditions within the German villages Westrup and Bockholte since 1993. This research resumes a longitudinal analysis initiated in 1952 and complies with arrangements made with the project partners. General supraregional patterns of childhood in rural areas are identified and analyzed by including specific objectives of childhood transition into the superordinate analysis. The specific objective Childhood in Transition Research in Rural Areas is an empiric analysis of present childhood forms and their transitions within rural areas. One of the main questions is: Are the possibilities of participation in resources like education and day care equitable? Furthermore, we endeavor to study the perception and evaluation of rural childhood as an indicator for the quality of location in rural areas. The results will be presented as scientific propositions for rural policy-making, aiming to enhance childrens living conditions and their educational opportunities. We will start our work by analyzing the assigned villages Westrup and Bockholte in accordance with the superordinate and specific objectives in 2012. Furthermore, the villages Kahlwinkel and Glasow in the eastern part of Germany will be regarded within the specific objectives in 2013. Overall, we will apply the following methods and instruments: analysis of social areas, evaluation of secondary statistics, interviews with experts, survey among inhabitants, written and oral questionnaires of children, written questionnaires of parents, group discussions with children, group discussions with parents, capturing of GPS data to record the childrens activity space and to gain information about their various courses during the day, photographic excursions to find out how the children themselves see their environment.
