Project code: 2812HS004
Contract period: 01.07.2012 - 30.06.2014
Budget: 175,374 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

In current studies on citizen's life situations differentiations between town and countryside are no longer apt. Today we categorize peripheral and central/prospering regions. Especially studies on social resources regarding future security and the recent life situation focus on peripheral or very peripheral regions in Eastern Germany. Recent studies on the situation of singular population segments or professional groups, on the 'average man', are rare. The goal of the proposed study is to acquire knowledge on strategies which different societal groups apply to manage everyday life, analyzed before the background of the socio-regional environments. Related questions are: which opportunities can life in a village offer, what kinds of tensions and obstacles exist, how are changes perceived and how are developments evaluated? The empirical study focuses on the 'normal' citizen. As everyday-life of all citizens cannot be researched, we will contrastively look at: old and young people; self-employed persons; employees and people out of a job; families, single mothers/fathers, singles; engaged/involved citizens; mobile and less mobile people; and also long-time residents and recent settlers/newbies. Together with the local stakeholders political action fields, which respect diversity and differentiation of social life in villages, will be visualized based on the results. Methodologically the research endeavor comprises a population survey (execution of 300 interviews in Kusterdingen and 200 interviews in Bischoffingen), semi-structured interviews with key persons and citizens, narrative interviews and also focus group discussions with adolescents. At the end results will be double checked via validation talks. The villages Ralbitz, Glasow and Mildenberg will especially be contrasted. This way the effects of different settlement structures, development paths and geographic positioning can be highlighted comparatively.
