Rural areas

Project code: 2812HS005
Contract period: 01.07.2012 - 30.06.2014
Budget: 167,047 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

The common research project aims at specifying the picture of rural societies and at illustrating (post)modern life concepts. In this context, the applicants will investigate the living conditions in Elliehausen (administratively belonging to the city of Göttingen) and in Groß-Schneen (municipality of Friedland, both Lower Saxony). The specific topic of the research project focusses on migration in rural areas, and deals with villages in their function as residential locations. The purpose of the study is to explain migration patterns with their specific dynamics, and to understand the reasons for moving in, and moving away from villages, and for staying there. Therefore, the locational offers of the villages with their surrounding areas from the inhabitants' points of view will be analyzed. Which are those locational offers that lead to the decision of choosing or maintaining the village as residential location? The research design for the common questions consists of a comprehensive survey of inhabitants and a group discussion with young people in both study locations. Expert meetings serve to explore the field. Validation discussions secure the quality of the results. The research question regarding migration and residence will be investigated with a case study approach. The sample will comprise four villages in different spatial categories and with varying migration patterns. Desk research and conversations with experts will help to sort spatial structures and processes. Migration and residence related questions are included in the common survey of the inhabitants. These and qualitative interviews with selected village inhabitants will be employed in order to work out the qualities of villages as residential locations and in order to identify reasons for migration and for staying.
