The core objective of the InNoPack project is to contribute to resource conservation and sustainable development by developing innovative and waste-avoiding system solutions for the sale of food without packaging. In order to make such a contribution to sustainable development and to a more ecologically compatible food consumption by dispensing with packaging, various factors have to be taken into account, which are reflected in the sub-objectives of the project: 1) Alternative packaging concepts or unpackaging solutions cannot or must not start at the retail level. For this reason, the chain of packaging and logistics processes upstream of food retailing should be investigated in order to identify adaptation options that save resources and minimize food losses. 2) Core packaging requirements include protection from mechanical, biological, chemical impacts and ensuring minimum shelf life. Switching to "unpackaged" and reusable containers can be a major challenge in this regard. With this in mind, the second sub-goal refers to the consideration of food waste prevention or reductions in food quality when developing unpackaged concepts. 3) The fundamental potential for avoiding packaging waste and reducing the ecological impact of unpackaging solutions can only be leveraged if the solutions are widely accepted by customers. The third sub-objective therefore focuses on the development of concepts that take into account the wishes of consumers and are therefore suitable for a wide range of customers and are not only aimed at niche users (e.g. LOHAS).
