Project code: 2822EPS008
Contract period: 01.07.2023 - 30.06.2026
Budget: 685,999 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: alternative protein sources, protein plants, nutrition, food pattern, nutrition physiology, health promotion, human studies, climate protection, sustainability, other legumes

The aim of the research project is the nutritional evaluation of the acute (Human Study 1) and chronic (Human Study 2) effects of a legume-rich diet in the dietary pattern approach (Planetary Health Concept), compared to a Western diet, in individuals with risk factors for cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. Both studies will provide compelling scientific evidence for the health-promoting effects of a legume-rich dietary pattern. Via Study 1, we aim to determine whether a legume-rich, plant-based meal can already have acute positive effects on the magnitude and duration of postprandial metabolic processes. Assessment of the legume-rich meal will be based on a wide range of physiological parameters as well as neuropsychological outcome measures. Study 2 will examine the longer-term effects of a legume-rich, plant-based diet compared to a Western dietary pattern. Study variables of the intervention are cardiovascular and metabolic parameters, as well as biomarkers of neurodegeneration and neuropsychological targets.
